Delray Beach Wildlife Education: How To Get Mice Out Of The Garage

Dealing with mice in your garage may seem like a daunting task at first, but if you know what to do, you can take care of the issue in a fairly short amount of time. Even if they don’t end up destroying anything in your garage, mice will at least put you at risk of disease and leave behind urine and feces. Factor in the potential for damage and it makes sense to get rid of these rodents as quickly as possible.

Get Rid Of Potential Food
The first step to getting mice out of the garage is removing any potential food source. Garages are known for having clutter of all types, from food to boxes. Take the time to clear up any crumbs and anything else in your garage. If you keep pet food or human food in the garage, make sure it is in tightly sealed containers. Do the same thing with your garbage so the mice can’t access this either.

Minimize Potential Shelter

In addition to getting rid of potential food, you should make an effort to reduce the possible shelter in the garage. You don’t have to get rid of all shelter; after all, mice will find a spot in your car if you leave them nothing else. Just take steps to get rid of the unnecessary clutter so there are fewer options.

Seal Up Entrances
Before you can get the mice out of your garage, you need to make sure that new ones don’t take their place as soon as you get rid of them. The only sure way to do this is to seal up all potential entry points to the garage. Mice are very small and great at getting into small spaces. This means you should seal any hole that is a quarter of an inch wide. If your garage doors aren’t flush with the ground or floor, then look for an accessory that will fill this gap for you so mice can’t get in this way either.

Methods To Avoid
It only takes a glance online to find dozens of ways “guaranteed” to get mice out of your garage or other areas of your home. Take everything you read with a grain of salt, even the methods outlined by self-proclaimed experts. There are a range of deterrents and repellents that you can buy or make yourself and they don’t work as well as the claims say. Ultrasonic sound machines are rarely effective and they are also expensive. Repellents also tend to be ineffective, whether you use a harsh chemical like ammonia or a natural remedy like cayenne pepper. You shouldn’t try these methods expecting results, but if you want to give them a go, then at least choose a natural option. Spreading ammonia around an enclosed place like your garage is a serious health risk that you should avoid. At least if you use something like cayenne pepper that you already have on hand, you will have only wasted time.

In addition to avoiding deterrents and repellents, you should avoid certain methods of killing the mice. Neither poison nor glue traps will be humane. Poison will kill the mice slowly and leave you with a different issue. That is because the mice will go back into their hiding spot to die, meaning you then have to search for their carcass and clean it up. Glue traps may seem like a good idea since they can theoretically catch more than one mouse at a time, but they are also inhumane. In the best case scenario, they trap the mouse and it dies of starvation or dehydration. In the worst case, the mouse escapes but loses fur or skin in the process.

Use Traps
Instead of trying one of the methods mentioned above, go with a humane option, such as live traps or snap traps. Live traps will require you to bring the mice that you catch to a new location far from your home so they aren’t able to find their way back. Keep in mind that relocating mice doesn’t necessarily guarantee their survival. In fact, they have low survival rates when relocated. That being said, most experts still consider this a better option than poison or glue traps.

If you plan on killing the mice, then use snap traps to catch them. These will kill the rodents instantly so they don’t suffer. They are also easy to clean up as you simply toss the trap and the mouse together. Just be sure to buy the appropriate snap trap size for mice.

Get Expert Help
Sometimes it just isn’t practical to take care of the mice in your garage by yourself. Maybe you don’t have the time or lack the patience. Perhaps you have tried trapping the mice yourself without success. No matter the reason, you can always call an expert to take care of the mice for you. They will already have the traps and other necessary supplies and know where to place them for the best results.
